Meditation Techniques

Effective meditation techniques involve bringing the mind deeply into the Theta brainwave state. This state is a deeply relaxed state of awareness - it is the same state as dreaming, however you keep conscious control. Using meditation techniques we can achieve many things. We have four different brainwave states, each acting as an indicator of the state of our mental consciousness. Sandy MacGregor's books about basic meditation techniques describe the various brainwave states and how to move from the high activity state down to the calming, relaxed meditation or Theta brainwave state.

Sandy proved the power of meditation to himself commencing in 1981. He is a Civil Engineer, a retired Army Colonel and was awarded bravery medals in Vietnam's Cu Chi Tunnels where he commanded the Original Tunnel Rats. He learnt meditation techniques from his son who had already used it to help his asthma and to save his own leg from amputation. Sandy applied it to weight to release - 49 pounds (22 kgms) and to controlling blood pressure. He even found inner strength after the tragic murder of his three daughters, using these same techniques.

The Beta state is our day-to-day waking state of consciousness. This is the state where we are multi-tasking (e. g., driving a car, listening to the radio, thinking about work) and the state in which we take on stress.

The Alpha state is the relaxed, focused state; we think of only one thing at a time in this state and we release stress in this state (the Peaceful Place method teaches how to do this in 30 seconds or less).

Using effective meditation techniques you can achieve the Theta brainwave state. This is the meditation state in which your mind is extremely acute and yet you may or may not have awareness of your body. It generally takes about four to seven minutes to get to Theta. CALM Meditation teaches the Peaceful Place technique to bring meditators to Theta very effectively.

These meditation techniques are excellent for dealing with:

  • Pain management and physical healing
  • Cultivating forgiveness and letting go of anger
  • Dealing with depression and negative emotions like fear, resentment or worry
  • Enhancing creativity and inventiveness
  • Losing excess weight
  • Establishing self worth and confidence
  • Developing inner peace and spiritual harmony
  • Managing sleep issues
  • Eliminating unhealthy habits like smoking

The Delta state is deep sleep. This state of brainwave activity does not involve thinking at all. Delta is reached by first going through Alpha, then Theta and finally into deep dreamless sleep. Everyone has the capacity to reach Delta when they go to sleep naturally each night. In meditation the aim is to go from Beta, to Alpha and then to the Theta brainwave state. Everybody can achieve this state. Some free meditation techniques that can start everybody off are:

Sit in a comfortable chair, in an open body position, with your feet flat on the floor. If you lie down then there is a tendency you may go to sleep.

If you prefer to lie down, then have your arm from the shoulder to the elbow on the floor (or bed or lawn) and then from the elbow to your finger tips have pointing towards the sky - that is at right-angles to the top part of your arm. If you fall asleep then your arm will probably drop to your chest and wake you up - we need to be awake. By the way, if you cross your arms or legs then you could be disturbed half way through your meditation either by wanting to move your arms or legs because of the lack of blood flow and therefore some pain.

As to clothing, have it comfortable and loose - if your belt or shoes are tight, then loosen them and have a blanket to keep warm if necessary.

I achieved a substantial amount from the CHI Seminar. Finally I have an anchor to hold onto in a world of emotions that were drowning me. Finally I have been down a path towards self-healing, where instant results have proved to me that I can and I will achieve things I never thought possible.

No-one ever told me about the power of self-talk, no expert ever suggested that I could overcome my anxiety through meditation, goal setting and spiritual alignment.

I still have a long way to go in regard to letting go of the past, but now that I have goals, and hope, the world is that much less scary, and the future that much brighter.

I mainly use the Inner Peace and Harmony CD almost every night when I wake up with my mind racing.

It puts me back to sleep.

I know it is not designed for that but that is what works for me.
